The Work

It took just under 3 years and over 20 visits to Ke'e Beach, on Kauai's North Shore to capture these optimum conditions. This 20 plus foot wave was the most difficult scene that I have ever photographed. The variable ocean and weather conditions played havoc in trying to capture the incredible power and beauty of the Sea. This scene was a 5 hour round trip drive from my West Side residence.

The Na Pali Coast image was photographed using an advanced technique to extend the tonal scale of the image.  To see shadow detail of black lava in shade and at the same time visible detail in back lighted white water on the same image, in the sunlight, is very unique. This is a technique that I innovated while photographing high contrast outdoor subject matter for my commercial clients.

This scene overwhelms me with its power, color,

texture and is full of magic.  Trade winds formed

all the elements. Moisture particles filled the air

and created misty back light. The sea was restless

with excitement. The suns power anxiously pushed

through the mist.  Pure Magic of Kauai's West Side !

Aloha Art Lovers,

From early childhood, my Love of Nature and all of it's varied weather has shaped my life in an artistic direction.

While in Europe in the Army, it was the architecture of old Europe that drove me to want to capture it on film. So in 1968, I purchased a $14 Kodak Instamatic. I learned right away that I needed a real camera with interchangeable lenses. My photography experience in Europe with my Minolta SRT 101, helped me to capture the experience as I traveled from Morocco atop a Truck, for three days, to El Aaiun in the northwestern portion of the Sahara Desert at the Atlantic Coast.

I fell further in love with photography during 2 different Sailing Adventures. The first Sailboat was a 62' John Alden Ketch built in London in 1933. 6 of us sailed 25 days across the Atlantic Ocean from the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands to the island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean.  The second  sailing adventure was on a 48' Hinkley American built sloop in 1968.  5 of us sailed the Caribbean from Antigua to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for 2 1/2 months.  If you ever thought you might not be a visually oriented person, try long distance sailing, it will change your perspective on life, forever.  The camera as a tool of self-expression was and is indispensable.

Choosing Northern California as my next home, Photography became a major part of my life. The raging weather and waves of the North Pacific is a picture to behold.  The winter waves were huge and driven by gale winds.  Many days I was the only person on the 7 mile stretch of Sonoma County Coast. Exposed to the freezing elements, I was setting up and photographing these most unbelievable scenes. The gale winds and cold felt like it was cutting right through me. But the scenes were powerful and worth it!

While living in Sonoma County, I developed my Commercial Photography business. I have been a Commercial and Fine Art Photographer for over 35 years. My high quality, large format, 4x5 inch film Photography has been used for U.S. and International Marketing.  My commercial photography work has also been used for display transparencies up to 18 feet long for San Francisco Trade Show Conventions.

Now I live in Hawaii for the warmth, the water and the color. My Photographs of Hawaii have been used for Lithographs, Posters, Giclee Art Prints, Metal Prints and Wall Décor Prints.

The Work

This winter scene took place in Sonoma County, Northern California.

I relied on this professional dancer to help illustrate the intense beauty and mood of this huge wave at that particular location. The wave hits with extreme power and sounds like rolling thunder. The water temperature was 41 degrees F., unfortunately she did get partially wet but she did survive this extreme expression of life-fullness.

Thank you Geri for your adventurous spirit.
